Virginia Reckless Driving Points

Virginia Reckless Driving Points

Like many other states, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) uses a point system to evaluate a person’s driving ability and track dangerous drivers. To do this, the DMV assigns a point value to each type of traffic offense. When you are convicted of the charge, the appropriate number of points, or demerits, is then deducted from your driver’s license.

Depending on the offense, a traffic ticket can cost you three, four, or six points on your driver’s license. If you receive demerit points within a two-year period, then DMV will suspend your driver’s license.

Examples of the demerit points assigned to traffic violations include:

The best point balance you can achieve in Virginia is +5. To improve your point balance, you may complete a driver improvement course to receive five positive points. This may be done once every two years. You will also receive one positive point for each calendar year when you have no traffic infractions.

Fortunately, just because you have been charged with reckless driving does not necessarily mean you will be convicted of the crime. With help from an experienced traffic defense attorney, you can fight the charges against you and, in many cases, reduce or avoid them.
